The Redditvision Song Contest Special Edition 3, commonly shortened to SE3, was the third special edition and thirty-third overall edition of the Redditvision Song Contest. It was hosted by u/Dugly_Uckling in Valparaíso, Chile after their win in the previous special edition, with the song "Tómame" by Francisca Valenzuela.
The winner was Antigua and Barbuda with the song "affection" by BETWEEN FRIENDS.
Theme
Likewise with the first special edition and second special edition, the moderators asked for theme suggestions from the wider community. On 6 September 2019, a theme ballot was posted on the subreddit. Users could submit three ideas or more each. On 9 September 2019, the ballot closed and the moderators selected 30 potential themes for the edition. Using an approval voting system, users could then vote for all theme ideas they liked. The ideas with the most likes would then proceed to the next round, where the winning theme would be randomly selected.
The 6 themes that the community voted for were:
- Your entry has to begin with the first letter of your Reddit username
- Below 100,000 views on Youtube
- Songs without a music video
- "5's a crowd" - 12 heats of 5 songs (in a full edition). Users are allocated to a heat via pots based on past voting patterns. Similar taste = same semi. Each Heat will have 2 qualifiers. AQ's vote in 2 heats while other users only vote in their own
- The Time Warp - Music from the four "Golden Decades", from 1961 - 1999
- Copycat - Users won't be revealed and your entry should be trying to imitate another user
On 13 September 2019 the theme was revealed. Each user has to submit a song that starts with the first letter of their Reddit username. Some people were allowed to use the second or third letter of their username due to having letters such as Q, Z and X in their username.
Format
On 11 September 2019, while the theme submission was running, several changes to the rules were announced along with some general updates to the contest. This included:
- A reduction of the maximum crossvoting power to 25%, rather than the previously used 33%
- The rule on constituent countries expanded to include the Danish and Dutch kingdoms, in addition to the United Kingdom. This means that six new countries: Aruba, Curaçao, Faroe Islands, French Polynesia, Greenland and Sint Maarten were all eligible for the first time.
- Option for existing users to swap to an account under the required age of 3 months, provided that verification is given.
- The six automatic qualifiers getting 'reserved spots' during the sign-ups.
Participants
A total of 64 users signed up for the edition. This was an increase from the 53 users that signed up for the second special edition a year ago, but a decrease from the maximum 66 users to sign up for edition 29 and edition 30.
For the first time since edition 28, the contest saw debuting countries. As a result of the expanded rule on constituent countries and territories, the countries of Aruba, Curaçao, Faroe Islands, French Polynesia, Greenland and Sint Maarten all participated for the first time. As of early 2021, this is also the most recent edition to have debuting countries.
Six users made their Redditvision debut: u/flaire-en-kuldes, u/las_facepalmas, u/ljm1701, u/narna1, u/Pr0bablyIllegal and u/Wankingly.
As a result of the recent rule change allowing users to switch to new accounts, some decided to swap accounts. Starting from this edition, u/GThing64 also would participate under the account u/Georgie-M, and u/Lilla- would participate under the name u/lills19.
